ALSATIAN ORANGE COOKIES 
2 1/2 c. flour, sifted
1/4 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. baking soda
1 c. vegetable shortening
1/2 c. sugar
1/2 c. packed brown sugar
1 med. egg, beaten
2 tbsp. fresh orange juice
1 tsp. grated orange zest

In medium mixing bowl, sift flour again with salt and baking soda. In separate, large mixing bowl, cream shortening with sugars. Mix in egg, orange juice, and orange zest and beat thoroughly. Add flour mixture gradually, mixing well after each addition. Drop by tablespoons, 2 1/2 inches apart, onto ungreased cookie sheets. Bake in preheated oven at 400 degrees for 12 minutes until golden. Makes about 30 cookies.
