WALDORF RED CAKE 
1/2 c. shortening (Crisco)
1 1/2 c. sugar
2 eggs
2 oz. red coloring
1 tsp. cocoa
2 1/2 c. cake flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. vanilla
1 c. buttermilk
1 tsp. vinegar

Cream sugar and shortening, add eggs. Make paste of coloring and cocoa (will be a liquid). Add to mixture. Add flour with salt blended, alternately with buttermilk and vanilla. Last fold in soda with vinegar. Bake in large pans (9 inch round) at 350 degrees for 30 minutes. Cut into 4 layers when cool.

FROSTING:

1 stick butter (4 oz.)
1/2 c. Crisco
1 c. milk
1 c. powdered sugar
2 tbsp. flour
1 tsp. vanilla

Cook flour and milk into thick white sauce. Cool. Cream butter, Crisco, sugar and vanilla thoroughly with mixer for 10 minutes or until it looks light and fluffy. Blend in cool flour mixture. Spread between layers.
