This used to be served in the Long Beach CA. school systems for lunch in the 1950s & 60s. I haven't made this in years, but I grew up with it. Most kids looked forward to this on the lunch menu. Love it !

I have always loved this stuff. Williamsport (PA) schools used to serve it also; it was called Gravy Train.

Yes! Yes! I used to have my mom go to the school to buy this lunch and bring it home when I was sick! (I was spoiled, she did!) I just made it and wow...delish! I added some mushrooms because now I'm older (56), and it was totally fab. What a dish! Try it!

My dad made this with mushrooms. We look forward to the nights when dad had to cook. I cooked it for our kids and now when 2 sons are going to university it is a staple for them.

Childhood dish always made by my father. We have always had our on rice and add a little worstshire sauce. Try it with a diced Jalapeano for a little kick. For a side we do cornbread and hearty vegatable like green beans or broc

They served this in Minnesota schools through the mid eighties at least. It's one of my absolute, all time favorites! My grandmother used to make it for me as well (perfectly too). This is one of those cheap, easy dishes that are absolutely delicious and require no add-ins. Heaven on a plate!

This was great. My husband (who can be hard to please sometimes) even said "it's good". And it was easy to make. I will definitely be making this again.

My family is from Minnesota, so this was a family recipe. In California, no one I knew had ever heard of it. Mom always made a gravy with flour and milk, and served over boiled potatoes. Easy and cheap!!

 Carolyn S Kopp (Florida) says:
I am going to try this recipe. My mom used to make what she called Hamburger hash but now that I remember it was like a gravy. The only thing she didn't have back in the 1960s was the Kitchen bouquet. My mom passed away in 2004 and I was wishing I got her recipe. We were kind of poor and we would have it over bread. Thanks for a happy childhood memory. I will make this for our family now.

Always had this for lunch at school. My mom couldn't make it as good as school. Back then I don't think they had Kitchen Bouquet though, probably added a little Worchestershire or beef broth.

Going to a small school in WI. I was fortunate to enjoy this at least once a week, as a rule on wed's. The sweet ladies who volunteered their time, would give us the left overs. We had a healthy class of 65 students, who for the most part excelled both in sports and academically. It was called HOT LUNCH, It was delicious and nutritious, and I still have the recipes.
