First ate this at school lunch in the 1950's. Made it for my kids, and it's been a favorite ever since. Comfort food at its best!

When I was married, my father-in-law (God rest his soul, he was a GOOD man!) had retired from the Army as a chef. He made this at home on occasional Sundays and we got it over toast with eggs. If you'll pardon the expression, it was always known as Shit on Shingles, and it's as good today as ever! It's snowing up a storm here in Connecticut this morning and I had a hankering for some down-home, plain old good country comfort food. When this came to mind I jumped on the Net and found this recipe. A quick trip to the store before the roads became impassable and came home with Kitchen Bouquet and a pound and a third of fresh ground beef. In the pan, add the gravy fixings, and "git" the eggs. OH, MAN!!! I'm in Heaven again!!!

This was on the monthly school lunch menu in Erie, PA. As an elementary school student in the 60's, I looked forward to this dish. We had "Lunch Ladies" who were "Nazi's" when you returned your dishes to be washed. Clean plates were strictly enforced -- no problem with this meal! I do recommend, sauteing onion with ground beef. I also used combo of ground beef and bison (it's a Colorado thing).

It was our favorite lunch at school in the sixties! We have matched that recipe perfectly by using the ground beef, one packet of dry Lipton onion soup mix and one jar or can of beef gravy! And, just like school, we serve with green beans, mashed potatoes, and a big soft dinner roll! Dee-lish-us!

I've been eating this for at least 65 years. I never get tired of it. I'm 75 now and still love this meal. I just had some for supper.

This needs a beef boulion. No beef flavor without it.

My mouth is watering for this. We are on lock down due to the pandemic... but I AM sneaking out today to purchase the Kitchen Bouquet. Have a ripe tomato on the counter... will marinate onion slices for sides... and LOCK THE DOOR and refuse to answer. Thanks for this recipe. Can hardly wait...

 Bessler (Pennsylvania) replies:
Hey Phyllis, Do have any GravyMaster? Use in place of the Kitchen Bouquet. Basically the same stuff. Won't change the taste...

We do a layer of Mashed Potatoes, then corn, then the hamburger gravy on top. It is so good, and complete meal. You can substitute green beans and other vegs too.
