1 c. flour
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 c. sugar
2 tsp. baking powder
2 tbsp. cocoa

Sift together above ingredients. Cut in 1/4 cup shortening. Add 1/2 cup milk and 1 teaspoon vanilla. Mix lightly. Add 1/2 cup nuts if desired. Spread in 8" square pan.

SAUCE:

1 c. boiling water
1/2 c. brown sugar
1/2 c. corn syrup
2 tbsp. cocoa

Mix sauce ingredients and pour over mixture in pan. Bake 50 minutes at 350 degrees. Serve with whipped cream or ice cream.
