FRANCES' OATMEAL CRISPIES 
1 c. shortening (butter)
1 c. brown sugar
1 c. granulated sugar
2 eggs, well beaten
1 tsp. vanilla
1 1/2 c. plain flour
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. baking soda
3 c. quick cooking oatmeal
1/2-1 c. chopped nuts
6 oz. chocolate chips

Thoroughly cream shortening and sugars. Add eggs and vanilla; beat well. Add sifted dry ingredients. Add oatmeal, nuts and chocolate chips; mix well. Shape into rolls, wrap in waxed paper and chill thoroughly or overnight. Slice 1/4 inch thick. Bake on ungreased cookie sheet at 350 degrees for 10-12 minutes. Let cool 1 minute, loosen, let cool longer before removing from sheet. Freezes well. Makes 5 dozen.
