DATE SWIRLS 
FILLING:

1/2 lb. finely chopped dates
1/2 c. sugar
1/2 c. water
1/2 c. chopped nuts

Boil the first 3 ingredients listed under filling together for 5 minutes. Remove from fire and add the 1/2 cup chopped nuts. Cool.

DOUGH:

1/2 c. shortening
1/2 c. white sugar
1/2 c. brown sugar
1 beaten egg
1 1/2 c. flour
1/4 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. baking soda

Cream together the shortening, sugars, and egg. Sift together the dry ingredients and add to egg mixture. Roll out on floured board to 1/4" thick. Spread filling and roll up like jelly roll. Chill overnight or until thoroughly chilled. Slice paper thin and bake on ungreased cookie sheet at 400 degrees for 12 minutes.
