2 c. white sugar
1 tsp. baking soda
1 c. buttermilk
1 pinch salt
2 tbsp. butter
2 1/3 c. pecan halves
2/3 c. pecan pieces (3 c. pecans in all)

In 8 quart saucepan, combine first 4 ingredients. Cook over high heat, 210 degrees, for 5 minutes, stirring frequently, scraping bottom of pan. Add butter, nuts, and stir constantly a minute or two. Remove from heat; let cool 1 minute. Beat until smooth (very little). Drop by spoonfuls on greased sheet.
