TOFFEE-NUT BARS 
1/2 c. soft shortening (half butter)
1/2 c. brown sugar
1 c. sifted white flour
2 eggs
1 c. brown sugar
1 tsp. vanilla
2 tbsp. flour
1 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
1 c. moist shredded coconut
1 c. cut-up almonds (or other nuts)

Mix together thoroughly: shortening and brown sugar. Stir in cup of flour. Press and flatten with hand to cover bottom of ungreased 13x9 inch oblong pan. Bake 10 minutes at 350 degrees. Cool and add almond-coconut topping consisting of well beaten eggs, brown sugar and vanilla; together with flour, baking soda, salt, coconut and nuts, mixed well. Return to oven and bake 25 minutes more until topping is golden brown. Cool slightly, then cut into bars. Yield: 2 dozen 1 inch by 2 inch bars.
