Butter, size of an egg
1 c. sugar
1 egg, well beaten
1/2 lb. dates
1 c. boiling water
1 level tsp. baking soda
1 1/2 c. sifted all - purpose flour
Flavor to taste
1 c. chopped nut meats

Cream butter and sugar well. Add well beaten egg. Cut dates into small pieces. Put into bowl, separately, pour over them boiling water to which soda is added. Cool. Mix with first cream mixture adding flour and flavor to taste. Add nut meats. Start in hot oven at 375 degrees for 15 minutes. Finish at 350 degrees until done. Needs no frosting.
