DATE BREAD 
1 c. dates, chopped
1 c. boiling water
1 c. brown sugar
1 tbsp. shortening
1 egg
1 tsp. vanilla
1/4 tsp. salt
2 c. flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1 c. walnuts

Pour boiling water over dates; cool. Cream shortening and sugar. Add egg and vanilla; combine with date mixture. Add dry ingredients. Pour in well-greased pan.

Bake at 350°F for 1 hour. Use electric mixer.
