BUTTERMILK COOKIES 
1/2 c. shortening (part butter)
1 c. sugar
1 egg
1/2 c. buttermilk
2 tsp. vanilla
3 c. all-purpose flour
1 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. nutmeg
1/4 c. sugar
1 tsp. cinnamon

Mix shortening, 1 cup sugar and egg thoroughly. Stir in buttermilk and vanilla. Measure flour by sifting. Blend dry ingredients into shortening mixture. Chill dough 1 hour.

Heat oven to 400 degrees. Drop by tablespoonfuls on greased baking sheet. Flatten with bottom of greased glass dipped in mixture of 1/4 cup sugar and cinnamon. Bake 8 to 10 minutes. Makes about 30 cookies.

Note: If you use self-rising flour, omit baking powder, soda and salt.
