1/2 c. shortening
1 c. sugar
1 egg
1/2 c. buttermilk
1 tsp. baking powder
2 tsp. vanilla
3 c. flour
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. nutmeg
1/2 tsp. salt

Holds shape well for cut out cookies.

Mix shortening, sugar and egg. Stir in buttermilk and vanilla. Blend in dry ingredients. Chill dough 1 hour. Roll and cut. Bake at 400 degrees for 8-10 minutes.

TOPPING, if not frosted:
1/8 c. sugar
1 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. nutmeg

Mix and sprinkle on cookies before baking.
