RED VELVET CAKE 
1/2 lb. butter
1/2 c. Crisco
3 c. sugar
2 tbsp. cocoa
5 eggs
3/4 c. sweet milk
3 c. plain flour
1/2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
1 (1 oz.) bottle red food coloring
1 tbsp. almond flavoring

Cream butter, shortening, sugar and cocoa. Add 1 egg at a time and beat well. Add milk alternately with flour (sift flour, salt and baking powder together). Add food coloring and flavoring. Bake at 325 degrees for 1 hour and 45 minutes.

ICING:

8 oz. pkg. cream cheese
1 stick butter
1 box powdered sugar
1 tsp. flavoring

My first attempt at a red velvet cake. Made it for my husbands birthday because I couldn't find one at the bakery. What luck! Because this was absolutely delicious! Everyone loved it and easy to make. The recipe does not state what size pan to use. I used 3 - 9 inch x 1 inch round pans. They were done in about 35 minutes. I also doubled the icing recipe to allow for plenty of frosting between and on top of layers. Will defiinitely use this recipe again.
