AUNT MARTHA'S RED VELVET CAKE 
1/2 c. shortening
1 1/2 c. sugar
2 eggs
2 oz. red food color
1 tsp. vanilla
2 c. flour
1 tsp. salt
2 tbsp. color
1 c. buttermilk
1 tbsp. vinegar
1 tsp. baking soda

Cream together shortening, sugar, eggs, food coloring, and vanilla. Beat very well until smooth. Sift together flour, salt, and 2 tablespoons color. Add flour mix to creamed sugar mixture, alternating with buttermilk.

Mix together vinegar and soda. Beat well and blend into batter. Bake at 325 degrees for 25-30 minutes. Makes 2 layers.
