APPLE PAN DOWDY 
6 med. tart apples (pared and thinly sliced) making 6 c.
1/2 c. sugar
1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon
1/4 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. ground nutmeg
1/2 c. maple flavored syrup
3 tbsp. water
2 tbsp. butter (melted)
1 1/4 c. flour
1/4 tsp. salt
1/3 c. shortening
3 tbsp. milk
3 tbsp. melted butter

Heat oven to 350 degrees. Mix apples, sugar and spices, 1/4 teaspoon salt. Place in ungreased 2 quart casserole. Mix syrup, water and 2 tablespoons butter, pour over apples.

Mix flour, 1/4 teaspoon salt, cut in shortening. Sprinkle in milk, 1 tablespoon at a time, mixing until flour is moistened and pastry almost cleans sides of bowl. Shape into ball, flatten on lightly floured board.

Roll to fit top of casserole with floured rolling pin. Place over apples, brush with melted butter. Bake 30 minutes, remove from oven and cut crust in small pieces with sharp knife, mix into apple filling. Bake until apples are tender and crust is golden brown. (About 30 minutes more) Serve with cream while still warm. Serves 6.
