2 c. brown sugar 4 c. flour 1 c. shortening 3 eggs, well beaten 1 tsp. baking powder 1/2 tsp. baking soda Pinch of salt FILLING: 2 1/4 c. dates, chopped 1 c. nuts 1 c. water 1 c. sugar Cook dates, sugar and water together for 10 minutes over low heat. Add nuts then cool. Cream shortening and sugar, add eggs and flour which has been sifted with salt, baking powder and soda. Chill dough for 2 hours. Divide the dough into 2 parts and roll about 1/4 inch thick. Spread with date filling and roll like jelly roll. Place in ice box overnight then cut with sharp knife 1/4 inch thick. Bake at 375 degrees for 12 minutes. |
