THE CHRIST CHILD'S BIRTHDAY CAKE 
3 1/3 c. flour, sifted
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. allspice
1 tsp. nutmeg
1 tsp. cloves
1 c. shortening
1 2/3 c. white sugar
4 eggs
1 c. walnuts
1 c. buttermilk
1 c. seedless blackberry jam

Sift dry ingredients twice. Set aside. Cream shortening and sugar in large bowl, add eggs. Sprinkle small amount of dry ingredients over nuts. Helps prevent nuts from sinking. Add alternately dry ingredients and buttermilk to sugar and shortening mixture. Stir thoroughly.

Stir in jam. Add walnuts. Mix well. Grease 10 inch angel food pan. Line pan with wax paper. Grease wax paper. Pour in mixture. Bake in preheated 350 degree oven for 1 1/2 hours. Cool before icing.

ICING:

1 lb. brown sugar (2 1/2 c.)
1/2 c. evaporated milk
1 stick butter

Combine all ingredients. Bring to boil. Boil 1 minute. Beat until thick enough to ice cake. Cake decorations include small clusters of holly with berries and 1 white candle. Add the figure of Christ from the manger scene. Light the candle after dinner and invite old and young alike to sing Happy Birthday to Jesus.
