CANDY CANE COOKIES 
1 c. shortening or (1/2 butter & 1/2 butter)
1 egg
1 c. sifted confectioners sugar
1 1/2 tsp. almond extract
1 tsp. vanilla
2 1/2 c. sifted flour
3/4 tsp. salt

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Mix together first 5 ingredients and add sifted flour and salt. Divide dough into halves. Blend into one half 1/2 teaspoon red food coloring. Roll 1 teaspoon of each color into a strip about 1/4 inch long. Place strips side by side; press lightly together and twist like rope. Place on ungreased cookie sheet. Curve top down to form handle. Bake about 9 minutes at 375 degrees. Remove from cookie sheet while warm and sprinkle with a mixture of 1/2 cup of peppermint candy and 1/2 cup sugar. Makes 4 dozen cookies. Delicious!
