MERINGUE SPICE CAKE 
1 1/4 c. flour
1/4 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. cloves
5 tbsp. shortening
1 c. brown sugar
1 egg yolk
2/3 c. sour milk (1/2 tsp. vinegar in regular milk)
1/2 tsp. vanilla

Mix dry ingredients together. Cream shortening and egg yolk and sugar until light and fluffy. Add vanilla to milk. Add half of flour and half of milk, alternating to creamed mixture. Blend well each time. Pour into greased and floured 8x8x2 inch pan and cover with meringue almost to edge.

MERINGUE:

1 egg white
1/2 c. brown sugar
1/2 c. chopped nuts (optional)

Bake cake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes.
