MURIEL'S MERINGUE SPICE CAKE 
3/4 c. shortening
2 c. brown sugar
2 egg yolks, beaten
2 1/3 c. flour
1 1/4 c. sour milk
3/4 tsp. salt
1 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. vanilla
1 tsp. cloves

Thoroughly cream shortening and sugar. Add egg yolks and beat until fluffy. Add sifted dry ingredients alternately with milk and vanilla. Pour into greased 9 x 13 inch pan. Cover with brown sugar meringue. Bake at 325 degrees about 50 minutes.

BROWN SUGAR MERINGUE:

1 c. brown sugar
2 egg whites, stiffly beaten
1/2 c. nut meats, broken

Slowly add sugar and nuts to egg whites. Beat until smooth. Spread over batter and bake as directed.
