POOR MAN'S SYRUP COOKIES 
1 c. dark cane syrup
1 c. sugar
2-3 tbsp. shortening
1/2 c. water
1 tsp. vanilla
1/2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. baking soda, level
Approx. 4 1/2 c. flour

Cream shortening, sugar and syrup. Add vanilla. Sift dry ingredients together and add alternately with water. Roll out on floured board and cut in strips. Handle dough as little as possible. Grease cookie sheet. Bake at 325-350 degrees about 8-10 minutes. Do not work alot of flour into them.
