POTATO GRATIN 
3 lb. baking potatoes (about 6 lg.)
6 oz. Gruyere or Swiss cheese, grated
1 clove garlic, peeled and slightly crushed
1/2 tsp. salt
1 1/2 c. heavy cream
Sliced onions

Peel potatoes and slice in 1/8 inch slices. Heat oven to 350 degrees. Rub shallow 2 quart baking dish with garlic. Layer 1/2 potatoes evenly in bottom of pan. Layer 1/2 of sliced onions, in amount desired. Sprinkle with 1/2 cheese and salt and drizzle with 1/2 cream.

Repeat with remaining ingredients. Bake, uncovered, 1 1/2 hours or until potatoes are very tender and top is browned and crisp.
