BATTER:

1/4 cup shortening
1 cup sugar
1 cup milk
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
3 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt

Mix together first 6 ingredients. Set aside.

BERRIES:

1 cup water
1 cup mashed berries
3 cups berries

Boil together water, mashed berries and berries. Butter 9x13-inch dish. Place batter in bottom. Place berries on top (I use a slotted spoon). Cover with liquid and mashed berries. Dot with butter.

Bake at 350°F for 45 minutes or until cake tests done with toothpick. Cake will raise and be on top.
