Dearest Vanessa.
The poor man's shepherd pie recipe is great. It is called "poor man's" most likely because it is inexpensive, wholesome and nutritious. Some people cannot afford lamb and personally I don't like the taste of lamb. My daughter in New Brunswick, Canada introduced me to the same shepherd pie the way you make yours. I fell in love with the dish. My daughter is an American and so am I and I think it does not matter how you make the shepherd pie as long as you enjoy the taste of the food God provided for you. People are too picky. Vanessa, thank you for sharing your version of the recipe.

Excellent! Vanessa, if you have other recipes, send them our way! Will definitely make this again. I used carrots instead of corn and added a package of gravy mix. Drain the meat.

Vanessa, for a little variety, you might try adding green beans instead of peas. Also, I always mix my ground beef, corn and green beans with a little bit of tomato soup. That gives it a little moisture, some extra vitamins and a nice color.

Well drama aside lol thanks for posting ! I've been searching google for a little while now trying to find a recipe without beef broth so I didn't have to go to the store. Thanks again :)

My grandmother made a dish she called Shepherd's Pie and all it was is ground beef with mashed potatoes on top of that and then cheese on top of that. We didn't even get any veggies or gravy, but I loved it ;)

I really liked each and everyone's comments, I put a bit of water at the bottom of my cooking mixture, and I omitted the sugar. I replaced the sugar with spices. This is a universal type of mixture of food that can be made differently each time you make it. With different types of toppings. Thanks for all of the really good ideas. I did learn something from this recipe. Isn't the internet a nice way that we can exchange thoughts about meals.

I make shepherds pie all different kinds of ways, it is good to put 1 cup of salsa on top of the ground beef before the taters are put on.

Hi Vanessa,

This is a favorite with not only my kids and their friends, but all my grandkids too. I just make some variations to the receipe-we line our pan with biscuits to the dish form-we omit the peas for those who won't eat them-add brown gravy-and use various types of cheese depending on which group is eating that night. This is a very simple recipe.
