CHOCOLATE BROWNIES 
1 1/2 c. flour
1/2 tsp. salt
1 c. shortening
4 (1 oz.) sq. unsweetened chocolate
2 c. sugar
4 eggs, well beaten
1 tsp. vanilla
1 c. nuts

Sift together flour and salt, set aside. In top of double boiler, melt shortening and chocolate. Add sugar, mixing well. Stir in eggs and vanilla. Gradually add flour and salt, stirring well. Remove from heat and add nuts. Spread batter in a well-greased 8 x 12 inch baking dish. Bake in a 400 degree oven for 18 minutes. Cool and frost with chocolate icing. Makes 32 servings.

CHOCOLATE ICING:

2 (1 oz.) sq. unsweetened chocolate
3 tbsp. hot water
1 tbsp. butter
2 c. sifted confectioners' sugar
1/2 tsp. vanilla
1 egg, beaten

Combine chocolate and hot water in top of double boiler. Heat, stirring until chocolate is melted. Blend in butter, cool slightly and stir in confectioners' sugar and vanilla. Beat in egg. Spread on cooled cake or brownies.
