PEPPERNUTS
3/4 lb. butter (3 sticks butter)
1 1/4 c. sugar
1/2 c. milk
1 tsp. vanilla or 2 tsp. lemon juice
1/2 tsp. cream of tartar
1 tsp. cardamon
6 c. sifted flour

Cream butter and sugar. Add lemon juice or vanilla. Add small amounts of dry ingredients (mixed together) alternately with milk. Mix well. (May have to mix last of flour mixture with wooden spoon if dough is too stiff for your mixer). Take small amount of dough at a time and roll out into round strips. (Diameter approximately size of a dime). Place rolls on a wax paper lined cookie sheet and put into the freezer. (Can leave until ready to bake.)

Take out a couple of rolls at a time and cut into approximately 1/4 inch slices. Place on cookie sheet and bake at 350 degrees until edges turn slightly brown, approximately 10 to 12 minutes. (Dependes on oven.)

I "dump" cookies on brown paper bags to cool. After they are completely cool, store in a tightly covered container. (If keeping cookies for some time, keep in freezer or refrigerator so the butter does't get a rancid taste.)
