GRANDMA'S PEPPERNUTS | |
1 1/4 c. sugar 1 c. molasses 1 c. corn syrup or honey 2 c. melted lard 1 c. warm coffee 1 tsp. baking soda, dissolved in coffee 1/2 tsp. cinnamon 1/4 tsp. allspice 1/4 tsp. black pepper 1/4 tsp. ginger 1 1/2 tsp. salt 1 tbsp. anise seed About 6-7 c. flour Combine all ingredients except flour. Add enough flour to make a stiff dough. Take a piece about the size of a hickory nut and roll into a ball. Place on cookie sheet and bake in a 350 degree oven until lightly browned on the bottom. Makes about 2 gallon jugfuls. Grandma Sager always made an onion sack full of these about a month before Christmas and hung them in the attic by the chimney. She had to make that many because she had twelve children that liked to snitch them. |
