Cream butter and sugar; add eggs and vanilla. Sift flour, soda, cream of tartar and salt together. Add to creamed mixture.

Roll in waxed paper and chill. Cut slices off roll and bake on lightly greased cookie sheet in a 375 degree oven for 10 minutes.
