PINKY'S BEAN SOUP 
1/2 lb. Great Northern beans
1/2 c. chopped onions
1/2 c. chopped green pepper
2 stalks celery, chopped
2 lb. pork neck bones or other ham for seasoning
2 cans stewed tomatoes
2 tbsp. brown sugar

Wash beans, do not soak. Put in kettle with meat, onions and water to cover, plus 1 inch. Bring to boil, simmer for 2 hours. Add water to former level and rest of ingredients. Simmer over low heat for 1 more hour.

This cooked up thick and hearty. Seemed to lack salt or something a bit tangy to make it sing. And for a cold or cool day or night, it did hit the spot. Perhaps the meat could have added more flavor than it did.
The beans were well cooked and the broth was pink and satisfying.
