Bake a reserve of these cookies or any of the tempting variations. 2/3 c. Crisco 1 1/4 c. sugar 2 eggs 1 tbsp. milk 1 tsp. vanilla 3 c. sifted enriched flour 1 tsp. salt 2 tsp. double-acting baking powder Bake Crisco, sugar, eggs, milk and vanilla. Add combined dry ingredients and mix thoroughly. Roll 1/8 inch thick on lightly floured board and cut with cookie cutter. Bake in moderate oven, 375 degrees, on ungreased baking sheets for 8 to 10 minutes or until lightly browned. Remove from pan immediately and sprinkle with sugar, if desired. makes 6 to 7 dozen cookies. VARIATIONS: CRUNCHY COOKIES: Stir 1 cup very finely chopped nuts into cookie dough. ORANGE OR LEMON COOKIES: Use 1 tablespoon orange or lemon juice in place of milk and stir in 1 tablespoon orange or lemon rind. SPICE SUGAR COOKIES: Add 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg and 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon with dry ingredients. FILLED COOKIES: Cut sugar cookie dough with round cookie cutter. Place a spoonful of jelly or jam in center of one cookie and top with another cookie. press edges tightly to seal. Bake as directed. |
