THIEF BOYS (Polish Twist)
1 1/2 pkg. yeast
1 tsp. sugar
1/4 c. warm water
1 1/2 c. butter
2 1/3 c. sugar
3/4 c. hot milk
5 c. flour
3 eggs, beaten
1 1/2 c. finely chopped walnuts

Mix yeast, sugar and warm water together. Combine 1/2 cup butter and 1/2 cup sugar. Add hot milk and stir until butter is melted. Add to yeast mixture. Add 2 cups flour and beat until smooth; beat in eggs. Add remaining flour to make a soft dough.

Place in greased bowl, turning to grease the top. Cover and let rise in warm place until doubled in bulk, about 1 hour. Divide dough into fourths. Shape each fourth into 12 inch rolls. Divide each roll into 12 pieces, and shape each piece into a 7 inch rope. Dip each into melted butter, then sugar, then butter, then chopped nuts. Fold each rope into half; twist to make a braid. Place on greased baking sheet and cover. Let rise until double, about 20 minutes. Bake at 350 degrees for 15-20 minutes. Makes 4 dozen.

I used to make these years ago and lost my recipe. Had tried a number of times to find one on the web without any luck. Now that I have found it I will have to make them again! Thanks.

My mother clipped a Thief Boy recipe out of a Colorado newspaper 45 years ago! Over the years, I managed to find they were polish in origin. The recipe I still use is exactly the same as posted here except we have always used chopped pecans. They became a family winter holiday tradition. They have a distinctive flavor I have never found anywhere else. We make 14 inch ropes and twist them into figure 8s with the pressed-together ends under the center of the 8. Enjoy!!
