PENUCHE CHEWS 
2 c. flour
1 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. baking soda
3/4 c. butter
1 1/2 c. packed brown sugar
1/2 c. milk
1 c. powdered sugar
1 c. chopped walnuts
1 tsp. vanilla

FROSTING:

2 c. brown sugar
1/2 c. milk
1/4 tsp. salt
1/4 c. butter
1 tsp. vanilla

Combine in saucepan butter brown sugar and milk. Bring to a boil, stirring constantly. Boil 1 minute. Remove from heat. Stir in powdered sugar and nuts. Add vanilla. Sift in dry ingredients. Spread into greased jelly roll size pan. Bake 25 to 30 minutes at 350 degrees; cut into bars while warm. Cool. Top with frosting and a walnut half.

FROSTING: Combine sugar, milk and salt. Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally until soft ball stage, 236 degrees. Add butter and vanilla. Cool to lukewarm. Beat until spreading consistency. If necessary, thin with milk.
