FRUITED LAYER BARS 
1 1/2 c. sifted all-purpose flour
1 tbsp. sugar
1/2 tsp. salt
6 tbsp. butter
2 egg yolks
1/4 c. dairy sour cream
1/2 tsp. vanilla
1 c. finely snipped dates
3/4 c. dairy sour cream
1/3 c. apricot preserves
2 tsp. grated orange peel
2 egg whites
7 tbsp. sugar
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1/3 c. chopped walnuts

Sift together flour, sugar and salt. Cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Combine egg yolks, the 1/4 cup sour cream and vanilla; stir into flour mixture. Pat mixture into greased 13 x 9 x 2 inch pan. Bake in 350 degree oven for 20 minutes.

Combine dates, the 3/4 cup sour cream, apricot preserves and orange peel; spread over baked layer. Beat egg whites to soft peaks. Gradually add the 7 tablespoons sugar and cinnamon; beat to stiff peaks.

Carefully spread meringue atop date mixture; sprinkle with chopped walnuts. Bake in 350 degree oven for 30 minutes or until browned. Cool. Makes 4 dozen 1 1/2 inch squares.
