DATEWICH BARS 
1 c. dates, cut fine
1 c. white sugar (scant)
1 c. water
Chopped nut meats (optional)
1 3/4 c. quick-cook oatmeal
1 1/2 c. flour
1 c. brown sugar
3/4 c. melted butter
1/2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. baking soda

Boil dates, sugar, and water until thick; may add nuts if desired. Mix remaining ingredients together until thoroughly blended.

Pat half onto a cookie sheet, spread with date mixture, and cover with remaining oatmeal mixture. Bake at 350 degrees until brown. Cut in 2-inch squares.
