GOLDEN BAKED ONIONS
1/2 c. butter (1 stick)
6 med. onions, sliced
1 (10 3/4 oz.) can cream of chicken soup
1 c. milk
Salt and freshly ground pepper
3/4 lb. Gruyere or Swiss cheese, grated
French bread slices
Melted butter

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Butter 2 quart shallow oval baking dish. Melt 1/2 cup butter in large skillet over medium heat. Add onions and cook until tender and translucent, stirring frequently, about 15 minutes. Transfer onions to prepared dish. Combine soup, milk, salt, and pepper in bowl. Pour over onions. Sprinkle with grated cheese. Dip bread slices in melted butter on 1 side. Arrange buttered side up over onion mixture to cover completely. Bake until bread is browned, about 30 minutes. Serve hot. This can be served either as a side dish or with a salad to make a complete meal. Makes 6 servings.
