BROWN COFFEE CAKE 
1 1/4 c. flour
1 c. brown sugar
1/4 tsp. salt
1/3 c. shortening
1 tsp. baking powder
1/4 tsp. baking soda
1/4 tsp. cinnamon
1/4 tsp. nutmeg
1/2 c. sour milk
1 beaten egg

Mix flour, sugar, salt and shortening until crumbly. Reserve 1/4 cup. To remaining crumbs add baking powder, soda and spices. Mix well. Add milk and egg. Mix well.

Pour into greased and floured 8 x 1 1/2 inch round pan. Top with reserved crumbs. Bake at 375 degrees for 25 to 30 minutes or until done. Serve warm.
