NO FROST CHOCOLATE CHIP CAKE 
1 c. dates, cut up fine
1 tsp. baking soda
1 c. plus 3 tbsp. hot water
1 c. shortening or 2 sticks butter
1/2 tsp. salt
2 eggs
2 c. flour
1/2 c. nuts, chopped, not too fine
1 c. white sugar
1 tbsp. cocoa
1 tbsp. vanilla
1 c. chocolate chips

Add soda to dates and pour on hot water. Cream shortening and sugar; add to dates. Add eggs, flour, salt, cocoa and vanilla; beat well. Add 1/2 cup chocolate chips. Pour into a greased and floured 9 x 13 inch pan. Sprinkle remaining 1/2 cup chips and all the nuts on top. Bake 40 minutes in 350 degree oven.
