My parents were Lithuanian and in Saskatchewan in the 50s we had many suppers just as this recipe, very simple and delicious.

I'm 100% Lithuanian decent. Misplaced the old recipe. Now I know where the name "Bleenies" (BLYNAI) came from. One difference, my grannies & folks put in onions. Thanks, guys, brings back very, very, fond memories.

 Donna (Illinois) says:
My family used "bleenies" to describe a meal of meat ravioli/dumplings in a white cream mushroom sauce.

 Peter Markunas (Massachusetts) replies:
Donna, you are sort of correct.
We always referred to the flour crepes as blynai, or bleenies. However, my Grandmother referred to them by their specific name of "myltu blynai"
Blynai is a pancake.
myltu means flour, or crepes....love 'em with sour cream, cottage cheese and sour cream (Lent) or stuffed with onions and hamburg, with a butter and sour cream sauce....can't you just feel your arteries clogging now :)
Bulviniai is potato.
So, there you have it, potato pancakes both are blynai.

My grand mother was pure Lithuanian and lived in the upper Michigan. She would make blynais for breakfast. The smell was wonderful and would fill the whole house. I sure miss her. :-) :-) :-)

 Ella (Ontario) says:
My Grama was from Lithuania and we called them Bleenies. Except we drain the starch in a bowl over a strainer while grating the potatoes.

 Ron Halackna (Pennsylvania) says:
That is interesting. I am of Lithuanian descent and like all my fellow Lithuanians I know, I put jelly on the potato pancakes. I was completely unaware that some Lithuanians put sour creme or applesauce on theirs.

 Ginny M. (West Virginia) says:
I'm half Lithuanian from PA and we always grated onions in our bleenies and put sour cream on them. My Czech mom-in-law put in a little milk and it changes the taste but it's also delicious.

 Brian Wright (United Kingdom) says:
I'd often have these for lunch with Douna. I'm Scottish with a granny from Lithuania. I'm pretty sure when I helped my mum make them we'd squeeze the grated potatoes in a clean dish cloth to remove excess liquid.

 Brian Wright (United Kingdom) replies:
Oh and we too called them Bleenies.

My maternal grandmothers parents were Lithuanian, came to UK in late 1890s. These were the only recipe passed down. We called them "bleaners" not mistaking them for blinis. We mushed the potato on a stippled part of box grater.. I just liquidise now.., and added finely chopped onion but nothing else. Though I've added other things like flour and egg sometimes since. They were eaten on their own.. .no sour cream or apple sauce, etc. And, according to a great uncle, tasting best fried in chicken fat!

I am too from Lithuanian decent from Pennsylvania coal region. My grandfather made them for me and had onions with a side of ketchup. The best bleenies... of course.
