NOVA TEACHER JAPANESE STIR-FRY
CASSEROLE

This recipe is inspired by and dedicated to my fellow American, British, Canadian and New Zealander colleague friends here in japan who like I, have been forced into poverty and desperation by our former company, Nova, the now defunct English conversation school. Depending on which supermarket you shop at here in Japan (Seiyu is the safest bet in cheapness), this meal can cost just 350 yen and can feed more than one person or can provide multiple meals for one starving English pedagogue. This recipe requires a microwave and a rice cooker to achieve the best result but if you've mastered the fine art of cooking rice in a pan, and your Nova friends have a well-equipped kitchen, that'll do as well. Let's not however forget those who were completely displaced by Nova whose roofs were taken from over their heads. God bless your souls!

cooked rice
1 pkg. extra-firm tofu packed in water (found in the cold foods aisle)
1 pkg. (16-20 pieces) frozen Japanese gyoza (meat/vegetable dumplings)
2 bags bean sprouts (yes, even though we're virtually broke, we still have to eat our vegetables, and cheap ones at that)
soy sauce, teriyaki sauce or sukiyaki sauce

Since this is a "casserole", find a shallow microwaveable dish. But if your accommodation doesn't have one (let alone a microwave), you can vary this dish however you want.

Quickly stir-fry the bean sprouts so they don't become soggy (maybe one to two minutes) then set them aside.

Cook the gyoza according to the package directions. If reading Japanese confuses you beyond belief, add 1/3 cup of water to the pan of gyoza and cook covered, over medium-low heat for 5 minutes. Watch out for them sticking to the pan. Set them aside.

Drain the tofu and slice it into 8 slices depthwise. CAREFULLY add the slices to your hot and oiled frying pan and CAREFULLY cook them for a few minutes on each side, otherwise they'll crumble. Set aside.

Layer the bottom of the casserole with some of the rice. Follow this with some bean sprouts, 2-3 slices of tofu and 1/4 of the gyoza. Alternate layers with the top layer being that of bean sprouts.

Drizzle whichever of the sauces you have on hand over top and let the sauce settle to the bottom of the dish.

Heat in microwave on HIGH for 2 to 3 minutes or until warm.

An especially recipe for those former NOVA instructors who can't cook very well.

Enjoy! All the best to you during these rough times!

Since microwave ovens vary in power, you may need to adjust your cooking time.
