HUSH PUPPIES 
1 c. cornmeal
1/2 c. self-rising flour
1 tsp. baking powder
3/4 tsp. salt
1/4 to 1/2 c. chopped onion
1 egg, beaten
2/3 c. milk
vegetable oil

Combine cornmeal, flour, baking powder, salt and onion in large bowl. Add egg and milk stirring just until dry ingredients are moistened. Let batter stand 5 minutes.

Carefully drop batter by rounded tablespoon into deep hot oil (375°F). Fry turning once, 3 to 5 minutes or until golden brown; drain well.

Makes about 18.
