1 c. shortening
1 c. sugar
1/2 tsp. cream of tartar
1/2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. vanilla
1 egg
2 to 2 1/4 c. flour

Cream shortening, sugar, egg and vanilla. Sift together remaining ingredients and add. Mix well. Roll into walnut-size balls and put on cookie sheet. Press with bottom of glass dipped in sugar. Bake at 375 degrees for 8 to 10 minutes.
