ITALIAN DREAM CAKE 
1/2 c. shortening
1 stick butter
2 c. sugar
2 c. flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1 c. buttermilk
5 eggs, separated
1 c. chopped nuts
1 c. coconut
1 tsp. vanilla

Cream shortening, butter and sugar together. Sift dry ingredients, add alternately buttermilk and egg yolks to creamed mixture. Add nuts, coconut and vanilla. Mix thoroughly, fold in beaten egg whites. Pour into 3 (8 or 9 inch) layer pans. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 to 35 minutes.
