COTTAGE PUDDING 
CAKE:

1 generous tbsp. butter or shortening
3/4 c. sugar
1 egg
3/4 c. water or milk
2 tsp. baking powder
1 2/3 c. flour
1 tsp. vanilla

Cream shortening and add sugar and cream again. Then add egg, milk, baking powder, flour. Mix. Add vanilla. Bake 25 minutes in moderate oven.

TOPPING:

1/2 c. sugar
1 heaping tbsp. cornstarch

Gradually add 1 cup boiling water, stirring. Boil 10 minutes and remove from heat. Add 1 tablespoon butter and 1 teaspoon vanilla.
