DEVILS FOOD CAKE WITH SOFT
CHOCOLATE ICING
 
2 c. all-purpose flour
1/2 c. cocoa
1 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
2/3 c. Crisco
1 1/2 c. sugar
2 eggs
1 tsp vanilla
1/2 c. buttermilk
1/2 c. boiling water

Cream together sugar and shortening then add eggs and vanilla and stir well. Then add flour, cocoa, soda, salt, and buttermilk and boiling water.

Bake in sheet pan 350°F until done.

Soft chocolate icing:

4 tbsp. shortening
5 tbsp. cocoa
5 tbsp. hot milk
2 c. sifted powdered sugar
1/4 tsp. salt
1 tsp. vanilla

Melt together over hot water shortening and cocoa. Pour hot milk over sifted powdered sugar and salt. Stir until dissolved. Stir in vanilla and the hot cocoa mixture (mixture will be thin). Beat until thick enough to spread on cake.
