APPLESAUCE FRUIT CAKE 
1/2 cup butter
1 cup white sugar
1 tsp. vanilla
1 egg - beat well
1 1/2 cups applesauce
2 cups all purpose flour sifted
1 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1/4 tsp. cloves
2 tsp. baking soda
1 cup chopped nuts
1 cup chopped dates

Cream butter and sugar; add vanilla and beaten egg. Beat well. Sift flour with spices and soda, then add to cream mixture alternately with applesauce. Add nuts and dates.

Bake in loaf pan or tube pan 1 1/4 hours at 350°F or until done when tested.

Applesauce Fruit Cake:

1 lb. candied fruit mix adding dates and nuts

Raisins can be used in place of dates. When cake is partially raised candied pineapple and cherries can be placed on top of cake very carefully - or nuts can be placed on top of dough at the beginning of baking. This cake can be frosted with powdered sugar frosting or served with ship cream.
