OATMEAL COOKIES 
1/2 c. shortening
1/2 c. sugar
1/2 c. brown sugar
1 egg
1/4 tsp. vanilla
1/4 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. "calumet" baking powder
1 c. flour
3/4 c. oats
1/4 c. nuts (optional)

In medium bowl, mix shortening, sugars, egg and vanilla together until creamy. In separate bowl, mix together baking soda, powder, flour, oats and nuts; salt if desired. Mix flour mixture with sugar mixture; blend well. Then teaspoon drop them; roll them into a ball and dip tops with sugar. Bake at 325 degrees on an ungreased cookie sheet. Makes about a dozen and a half cookies.

HELPFUL HINT: Remove cookies when light golden brown; they will stay soft.
