CHEWEY CHOCOLATE-CHIP COOKIES 
1/2 c. (rounded) shortening
5 3/4 c. flour
1/2 c. butter
1/2 tsp. salt
2 c. brown sugar
2 tsp. baking soda, dissolved in 3 tbsp. hot water
2 c. sugar
1 lg. bag chocolate chips
4 lg. eggs
1/2 chopped nuts
2 tsp. vanilla

Cream shortening, butter and sugar; add eggs, one at a time. Add vanilla and mix well. Mix flour and salt; add 1/3 of the flour mixture to creamed mixture. Mix well; add 1/2 of the soda mixture. Add half the remaining flour mixture, then remaining soda mixture. Add remaining flour mixture and then the chocolate chips. Drop from teaspoon onto cookie sheet. Bake at 350 degrees for 12 minutes or until slightly browned. Note: This is a very large recipe.
