GRANDMA'S CARAMEL FROSTING 
Melt 1/2 cup butter in large saucepan. Blend in 1 cup firmly packed brown sugar and pinch of salt. Cook over low heat 2 minutes. Add 1/4 cup milk. Bring to boil. Blend in 2 1/2 cups powdered sugar. Add 1 teaspoon vanilla. Beat until smooth.

This was the best recipe I've found so far. Warning, once it cools, it becomes very hard. "Solution: break the caramel into pieces, add 1/2 cup or 3/4 cup of milk and microwave. Stir occasionally and the icing will become and remain pourable." Mine turned out excellent! Hope this helps.
