1 c. sifted flour 1/3 c. brown sugar 1/4 tsp. salt 1/2 c. soft shortening 1/4 c. evaporated milk 1 tsp. vanilla TOP: 1 egg, separated 1/4 c. evaporated milk 1 1/4 c. brown sugar 1/2 c. whole nuts For the bottom mix flour, brown sugar and salt. Work shortening in with a fork. Stir in evaporated milk and vanilla. Spread in greased 9 inch square pan and bake in 400 degree oven for 15 minutes. Meanwhile, mix slightly beaten egg yolk, evaporated milk, brown sugar and chopped nuts. Fold in stiffly beaten egg white. Spread over baked bottom layer. Arrange whole nuts on top. Reduce heat to 350 degrees and bake 30 minutes or until brown. Use wet knife and cut in squares while warm. |
